What Do Bats Normally Eat?
Bats are one of the creepiest animals around. Bats differentiate themselves by being one of the very few mammals that can fly. This is helpful in terms of their ability to find food.

About the Eating Habits of Bats
Bats are carnivores, meaning that they primarily eat meat. Because of their sharp teeth and creepy face, a lot of myths have been generated about bats, including them swooping down in the middle of the night and sucking the lifeblood out of some poor unsuspecting fool. This is not the case at all.

For the most part, bats eat insects. It is their primary food source. They will go after animals like mice, rats, and frogs, but avoid larger animals. Some forms of bats will attack a cow for food, but this only occurs when the bats are traveling in very large groups.

A bat understands that its likelihood of defeating a lion or even a dog or cat is minimal at best. Larger sized animals may have more meat and blood available to them, but they also weigh significantly more than a bat, which usually weighs no more than an ounce or two at most. They are no match for these larger sized animals. That is unless they are traveling in a large group, in even then their success is minimal.

Going for the Insects
The primary food that bats like to eat our insects. This includes such things as centipedes, wasps, roaches, and beetles. The reason that these particular insects are a favorable choice is that they have some meat to them. While a bat could easily devour ants, bees, flies, and moths, there isn’t much to any of those insects. On the other hand, there is a lot for a bat to sink its teeth into when you are talking about roaches and beetles. Grasshoppers and crickets also make for a good meal.

Often, when bats travel as a large colony, they will look for a location where there are thousands of insects available to them. This is why they find a hornet’s or wasp’s nest to be the perfect location for all of the colony to find food. One would think that Hornets and wasps would pose a danger to the bat, but that is not the case at all. They can easily defeat these aggressive insects, especially when they are in a large group.

You will also likely find bats near garbage dumps or large trash receptacles. These are locations where large numbers of roaches will congregate, making it an easy target for the bats.

Some Love Fruit
While most bats are carnivores, there are some species that will eat such things as blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries. Many assume that because these animals have sharp teeth that there is no way that they would eat anything other than meat, but that is not true. It is one of those odd behaviors in the animal world that simply can’t be explained by evolution.
